Ernesto Kunde

Miami has long been a complex landscape that continues to intrigue generations of visual artists. For Ernesto Kunde, transforming mangroves, wild birds, and weathered Deco architecture into a physical visual language is a natural process. His work interprets tropical surroundings while maintaining a colloquial tone, bringing Miami's natural and urban biosphere onto cut canvas, found wood, and corrugated aluminum.

Kunde infuses his work with a Pop Art sensibility, choosing highly saturated, contrasting tones and opaque shadows. While the world may not appear so stark in real life, Kunde captures and imprints each moment onto his chosen surfaces. Born in Paraíso do Sul, Brazil in 1973, Kunde began experimenting with works on paper, including drawings and controlled coffee stains, after returning to Brazil in 1995.

He has since refined his focus across a range of surfaces, especially found wood and canvas. Kunde has exhibited throughout South Florida at venues including Sardinas Gallery at St. Thomas University, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, the Little Haiti Cultural Center, and Locust Projects' Smash & Grab Fundraiser.

He has been represented by Miami-based HANGAR Gallery, participated in SCOPE Miami Beach and Art Miami Context, and was an artist-in-residence at the Bakehouse Art Complex. He lives and works in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood.
