Brian Lacey

Brian Lacey, also known as studio_baklava, is an artist and muralist working and living in Miami, Florida. Drawing inspiration from material choices and the symbolism of memories, his work examines the relationships people have with their environments and the experiences connected to them. Across his practice, reuse, material appropriation, and connections to the natural world become ways to strengthen dimensionality through layered documentation.

Combined with personal history, this creates a transformation from one state to another that reflects the resilience and adaptability of human identity within individual, societal, and environmental change. Both his studio work and public practice allow him to explore new techniques and tools, with attention to nuance and detail that informs his large-scale work. His current practice uses vivid explorations of paint and tangible mediums to examine the relationship between material, metaphysical, and spiritual realms.

Public art has long been the primary inspiration and motivation for Lacey's practice. For more than 15 years, he has chosen public art as a primary medium because of its power to reshape ordinary spaces, uplift viewers, encourage critical thought, and provide art free of charge to anyone who encounters it.
